Window Tinting Laws in Illinois: What Every Driver Needs to Know

A clear breakdown of Illinois VLT requirements for all window positions, what happens if you exceed them, and how we ensure every installation stays legal.

Window tinting laws in Illinois are relatively clear once you know them, but many drivers don't — and some find out they're in violation during a traffic stop. Here's everything you need to know before getting your windows tinted in Illinois.

What VLT means

VLT stands for Visible Light Transmission. It's the percentage of visible light that passes through the window film. A higher VLT number means lighter tint (lets more light in); a lower VLT number means darker tint. Factory glass on most vehicles already has a VLT of around 70-80%. When film is added, the combined VLT of the glass and the film must meet the legal minimum.

Illinois window tint requirements

  • Windshield: Non-reflective tint is permitted only on the top 6 inches of the windshield. No tint on the rest.
  • Front side windows (driver and passenger): Must allow more than 35% VLT of light in. This is the most commonly violated rule.
  • Back side windows: No restriction — any darkness is legal.
  • Rear window: No restriction — any darkness is legal. If the rear window is tinted, dual side mirrors are required.

Reflectivity

Illinois law also restricts how reflective window film can be. Front and back side windows cannot be more than 35% reflective. Mirrored or highly metallic films that create a mirror-like appearance are not permitted.

Medical exemptions

Illinois does allow exemptions for individuals with specific medical conditions that require reduced light exposure. If you have a qualifying condition, you can apply for a medical exemption that permits darker front window tinting. This exemption must be kept in the vehicle.

What happens if you exceed the limit

A violation of the window tint law in Illinois is a moving violation that comes with a fine and can affect your driving record. Enforcement is at the officer's discretion, and violations are typically discovered during traffic stops for other reasons. The remedy is removal of the non-compliant film.

How we ensure compliance

When we install window film, we verify the combined VLT of our film and your factory glass before installation. We do not install film that would bring front windows below the 35% VLT threshold. If you want maximum legal darkness on front windows, we use the appropriate film to get as close to 35% as legally allowed while staying clearly within the limit.
